BODY: I've decided to write a blog to document the restoration of my rubber-bumpered MGB-GT and to help explain, via vague description and colorful photos, what is being done and how. This blog also serves as a reference for me to provide to other (much0 more experienced) MGB owners when asking for advice on the various MGB forums!
A quick introduction to the car... its a 1978 MGB-GT in generally good condition that I recently purchased as a restoration project (see pics). People may argue when first seeing the car that it does'nt need an awful lot of restoration but I intend to completely restore the car back to as-new condition. At the moment I do not intend to do much to the engine/gearbox... the engine had an awful lot of work performed by the previous owner and it has been re-bored and a gas-flow head has been fitted... it starts first time and runs very well. Regarding the gearbox... all gears are smooth, no crunches and overdrive engages and disengages properly.

Upon driving the car there was a clunk from the rear and very bad vibration at highway speed. All road wheels appear straight and true and so after some inspection it appears that the propshaft UJs are worn. My initial work was going to focus on renewing both UJs in addition to replacing the thrust washers in the differential and renewing the pair of axle/rebound straps (one has perished badly). When I came to jack the car up I noticed that the castle rail on the offside was quite patchy at the front near the wheel arch. I therefore decided that I should investigate the sills/floor pan of the offside of the car when I next had chance. More on this with pictures in the next post.Labels: mgb gt restoration sill car bodywork engine

COMMENT-BODY:I've just subscribed. I purchased a 1973 MGB GT last October and have been putting off restoring it until now. Great blog so far - I'll be getting some tips no doubt.

COMMENT-BODY:Just starting to breath some life into my long dead 74 gt. owned her for twelve years but she has rusted unloved on my driveway for last eight years. looking for inspiration. have removed engine only before and also engine and gearbox. would recomend the latter. much less grief! although if you do go engine only I would definately renew the clutch while its out!!!

COMMENT-BODY:I've completed a 1974 BRG Chrome bumper wire wheel jobby which now does about 26k a year. I've also rebuilt the engine from scratch. If there's anything I can help with, just ask; I've been through the pain and lived to tell the tail.
